But what of Schlemm's canal -- which collects the fluid between the lens and cornea and delivers it to the blood stream -- or the dura mater?<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Lucky for us, there's no need to understand how eyes are made or how they work in order to use them. And use it we do, in ways that we probably don't even realize.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Consider the role of your eyes in determining distance. It's the fact that you have two eyes that give you depth perception. How do you know that one object is closer than another, or that one is moving while another stands still? It's all in the angles.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />It's important that your two eyes are located in different locations on your head. Each eye, as it focuses on a single object, reports the angle they are looking at to the brain. The brain instantly calculates the distance of the object based on these angles. I know what you're thinking. "So my brain knows that something is exactly 40 yards away?" Well, yes... and no.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />You know that something is 40 yards away only because you've been taught that unit of measurement. Your eyes don't know what a yard is, and your brain doesn't care. Your brain (and therefore you) only knows that an object is a certain distance away. It doesn't need to know units of measurement to know that an object is a distance away from you.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />And the amazing thing is that your brain calculates that distance faster than any computer possibly could. It does so every time you look at something. It does it without you ever thinking about it! Otherwise, you would experience some serious difficulty in hitting a baseball with a bat, completing a pass to a teammate in basketball, or driving without crashing into anything that got in your way.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The eyes are truly amazingly complex organs. Sometimes they experience elongation that can be corrected with lasik surgery, cataracts that must be removed, or many other issues that can infect such a complex organ.
